Abuse or Neglect of the Developmentally Disabled

If anyone needs our care and special attention, it is the Developmentally Disabled children and adults living in our midst. So often, we see them bagging groceries or cleaning up in a fast food restaurant, and more likely than not, these are the success stories. In so many other cases, the Developmentally Disabled stay at home or in some facility rarely if ever, allowed to venture outside and see the wonders of the world.

Some Developmentally Disabled people are fortunate enough to have understanding, caring families who surround them and meet their special needs. All too often, however, this extra burden places a strain on the family that must be resolved by at least some respite from the day in, day out demands of raising a special-needs child. For this reason, some families turn to long or short term care facilities to provide residential services for their loved one.

Unfortunately, some facilities fail to supply the services needed either because of limited or inappropriate staffing. Many of the issues that face the Developmentally Disabled and their families are the same affecting the elderly or infirm: physical abuse, neglect, inappropriate care and even sexual abuse.
